Ramapo Mountains Wildfire

Camp Yaw Paw Mahwah, NJ   11/19/2001-11/27/2001

NJFFS Section 2 and 5 crews spent the entire 2001Thanksgiving week in the Ramapo Mountains of Mahwah battling a large forest fire that consumed 61 acres of protected, natural land. Initial attack by a crew  of only four firefighters nearly had the fire contained at four acres, but changing winds carried embers far across the control line high onto a steep slope and the fire grew . Thanksgiving morning saw  a major flare-up and that made the Holiday dinner for many fire fighters only cold sliced turkey sandwiches and a warm bottle of water. Air support and mechanized ground equipment was brought in to assist. These images were scanned from prints of 35mm film.
